Mowing season is too short to spend it shoving a push mower up and down the yard. The Forks 22 is named for The Forks in Winnipeg, where the Red and Assiniboine rivers meet, and it brings together a 220cc gas engine, variable-speed rear-wheel drive and a 22 in (55.9 cm) heavy-gauge steel deck that can mulch, bag or side-discharge. It's sized for city lots, suburban yards and cabin lawns up to about 1/3 acre (roughly 1,350 m²).

Getting it going is simple. The 220cc air-cooled OHV 4-cycle engine has an automatic choke, so there's no priming and no choke lever to fuss with. Give the cord a pull and the choke looks after itself, adjusting to how warm or cold the engine is, whether you're firing it up for the first time that day or restarting after emptying the bag. That's handy when the grass is shooting up after a week of spring rain and you'd like the lawn done before dinner. Once the engine is running, the drive system takes over the hard part.

Set the drive's speed to match the way you walk and let the mower move itself across the lawn while you steer. That makes a real difference on inclines, lumpy ground and longer sessions. Steering around trees, fire pits and flower beds is easy on the 8 in (20.3 cm) front wheels, and the tall 11 in (27.9 cm) wheels at the back give the drive solid footing on hills and rough patches. Six height positions let you set the deck anywhere from 1.2 to 3.75 in (3.0 to 9.5 cm), whether you like a close, tidy trim or a longer, softer lawn.

Clippings go where you want them. Bag the first cuts of spring in the rear catcher, which holds 1.9 bushels (67.0 L), leave them on the grass in mulch mode all summer so they break down and feed the soil, or switch to side discharge when a rainy stretch has let the lawn get away from you.
