It looks after lawns of up to 2 acres (0.8 ha), whether that means a flat prairie lot or a property with gentle slopes, mature trees and a few garden beds. The series takes its name from the Red River, which winds through Winnipeg, the city Winnie was named after.

Under the hood sits a 725cc V-Twin OHV gas engine rated at 22 HP. Two cylinders share the load, giving you steady power when the lawn comes in thick after a wet spring, and starting comes from a compact, maintenance-free sealed AGM battery. There's nothing tricky about driving it, either. The hydrostatic transmission is run by two foot pedals, one forward and one reverse, and ground speed simply follows how far you press. There's no gearshift and no clutch. When you're mowing in long, straight lines across the back of the property, switch on cruise control and let your foot rest while the pace stays even.

The 46 in (117 cm) deck is stamped from 12-gauge steel and carries twin blades, so each trip across the yard takes a broad strip. Choose from 12 cutting heights between 1 and 4 in (2.5 to 10.2 cm), anywhere from a close, tidy trim along the front walk to a longer, easygoing cut out by the tree line. A 16 in (40.6 cm) turning radius lets you swing neatly around maples, fence posts, the fire pit and the flower beds, so you spend less time doubling back to catch what you missed.

A big lawn can take a good chunk of a Saturday, so the seat matters. The 15 in (38.1 cm) high-back seat uses cut-and-sew construction, sits at a comfortable 10-degree incline and slides fore and aft to fit your reach. Disc brakes give you firm control when slowing or stopping, and dual LED headlights let you finish the last rows as dusk settles on a long June evening.
