Its 54 in (137 cm) deck takes a wide bite on every pass, and zero-turn steering lets you swing around trees, sheds and garden beds without stopping to back up. When the mowing season runs from the first spring green-up to the first hard frost, a mower that covers this much ground gives you some of your summer back.

Power comes from a 747cc V-Twin rated at 24 HP. It's an air-cooled, overhead-valve, 4-cycle design, and its commercial-grade air filter is there for the dry, dusty cuts of late summer. Each rear wheel has its own hydrostatic transmission, so the two lap bars handle both speed and direction: push them forward together to track straight, or push one and pull the other to pivot in place. Top forward speed is 7 mph (11.3 km/h), which is plenty for the long, open runs out to the shelterbelt and back.

The deck is fabricated from 7-gauge steel, carries three blades across its full width and has a reinforced leading edge to shrug off the occasional bump. Six height positions span 1 to 4.5 in (2.5 to 11.4 cm), so you can keep things short and neat around the house and leave the grass longer out by the tree line. Dual LED headlights come in handy on those long June evenings when there's still lawn to finish after dinner, or for an early start before the heat builds.

Long sessions call for proper comfort, so the Prairie 54 gets a cushioned high-back seat that adjusts to fit you, plus ergonomic lap bars. Anti-turf tread on the 20 in (50.8 cm) rear tires helps it hold soft ground and go easy on the grass when you pivot. The 6 gal (22.7 L) tank is good for up to 4 acres (about 1.6 ha) between fill-ups, and it all sits on a welded frame of heavy-gauge steel.
